For the Love of Porridge

Porridge is becoming the norm in many people’s diets. This simple breakfast food brings a lot of health benefits. 

 

Porridge is so good for us and here are some of the reasons why:

  • Fruit, vegetables and pulses such as beans contain high levels of soluble fibre, so doe’s porridge and that’s why it helps lower Cholesterol.

  • It supplies essential B vitamins and also vitamin E

  • It encourages the growth of good bacterial as it contains a probiotic agent called ‘beta glucan’

  • Eating porridge has been shown to help in the production of serotonin; the brain transmitter which helps to keep our mood levels high.

  • It aids weight loss by boosting your protein intake.

  • It stabilises blood sugar levels which helps to keep weight off.

  • It is good for sports enthusiasts who want to sustain energy for longer as it has a low glycemic index, which means that it is an appetite suppressor and releases energy slowly

This is an extra easy porridge recipe for a delicious, comforting, and healthy breakfast. It tastes too good…  Even porridge haters like it… 

 

Ingredients – 1 serving

 

  • 40g of porridge oats

  • 240ml of fresh water

  • 1 teaspoon of honey

 

Method:

 

  • Put the porridge oats, the honey and the water in a saucepan and gradually bring to the boil

  • Once it has come to the boil turn it down and simmer for 5 minutes depending on how tender you like your oats

  • Stir it occasionally

  • If it gets too thick, just add an extra drop of water

  • For the microwave method, just follow the instructions on the pack

 

Serving suggestions:

 

  • Top with grated apple, blueberries and strawberries.

  • For a refreshing breakfast top with frozen summer berries like raspberries or blackberries and sunflower seeds.

  • Or just add fresh summer berries of your choice with some pine kernels on top.

  • Top with red apple slices, blackberries and fresh nectarine, peach or orange slices.

  • Add banana, almond and cinnamon.
